  86. /scientific instrument on the probe is trying to measure?  Like an instrument
  87. \measuring concentrations of natural ions in the area around some planet's
  88. /magnetic field? Sure, turn it off before you measure, but how long does it

  91. Good question. Of course, you could use an uncommon sort of material
  92. for your reaction mass, which would let you screen out a lot of
  93. interference.

  95. I think the ion contamination (they tend to become neutral fairly
  96. quickly, and in fact the exhaust needs to be neutralized quickly
  97. or the ion drive stops working) is secondary to how having
  98. the electric and magnetic fields around the spacecraft disturbed
  99. is going to affect fields-and-particles experiments..

  116.                Orthodox physicists, astronomers, and astrophysicists 
  117.           CLAIM to be looking for a "Unified Field Theory" in which all 
  118.           of the forces of the universe can be explained with a single 
  119.           set of laws or equations.  But they have been systematically 
  120.           IGNORING or SUPPRESSING an excellent one for 30 years! 
  121.  
  122.                The late Physicist Dewey B. Larson's comprehensive 
  123.           GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the physical universe, which he 
  124.           calls the "Reciprocal System", is built on two fundamental 
  125.           postulates about the physical and mathematical natures of 
  126.           space and time: 
  127.     
  128.                (1) "The physical universe is composed ENTIRELY of ONE 
  129.           component, MOTION, existing in THREE dimensions, in DISCRETE 
  130.           UNITS, and in two RECIPROCAL forms, SPACE and TIME." 
  131.     
  132.                (2) "The physical universe conforms to the relations of 
  133.           ORDINARY COMMUTATIVE mathematics, its magnitudes are 
  134.           ABSOLUTE, and its geometry is EUCLIDEAN." 
  135.     
  136.                From these two postulates, Larson developed a COMPLETE 
  137.           Theoretical Universe, using various combinations of 
  138.           translational, vibrational, rotational, and vibrational-
  139.           rotational MOTIONS, the concepts of IN-ward and OUT-ward 
  140.           SCALAR MOTIONS, and speeds in relation to the Speed of Light 
  141.           (which Larson called "UNIT VELOCITY" and "THE NATURAL 
  142.           DATUM").

  144.                At each step in the development, Larson was able to 
  145.           MATCH objects in his Theoretical Universe with objects in the 
  146.           REAL physical universe, (photons, sub-atomic particles 
  147.           [INCOMPLETE ATOMS], charges, atoms, molecules, globular star 
  148.           clusters, galaxies, binary star systems, solar systems, white 
  149.           dwarf stars, pulsars, quasars, ETC.), even objects NOT YET 
  150.           DISCOVERED THEN (such as EXPLODING GALAXIES, and GAMMA-RAY 
  151.           BURSTS).

  153.                And applying his Theory to his NEW model of the atom, 
  154.           Larson was able to precisely and accurately CALCULATE inter-
  155.           atomic distances in crystals and molecules.

  199.           Physicist Dewey B. Larson's Background

  201.                Physicist Dewey B. Larson was a retired Engineer 
  202.           (Chemical or Electrical).  He was about 91 years old when he 
  203.           died a couple of years ago.  He had a Bachelor of Science 
  204.           Degree in Engineering Science from Oregon State University.  
  205.           He developed his comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the 
  206.           physical universe while trying to develop a way to COMPUTE 
  207.           chemical properties based only on the elements used. 
  208.     
  209.                Larson's lack of a fancy "PH.D." degree might be one 
  210.           reason that orthodox physicists are ignoring him, but it is 
  211.           NOT A VALID REASON.  Sometimes it takes a relative outsider 
  212.           to CLEARLY SEE THE FOREST THROUGH THE TREES.  At the same 
  213.           time, it is clear from his books that he also knew ORTHODOX 
  214.           physics and astronomy as well as ANY physicist or astronomer, 
  215.           well enough to point out all their CONTRADICTIONS, AD HOC 
  216.           ASSUMPTIONS, PRINCIPLES OF IMPOTENCE, IN-CONSISTENCIES, ETC.. 
  217.      
  218.                Larson did NOT have the funds, etc. to experimentally 
  219.           test his Theory.  And it was NOT necessary for him to do so.  
  220.           He simply compared the various parts of his Theory with OTHER 
  221.           researchers' experimental and observational data.  And in 
  222.           many cases, HIS explanation FIT BETTER. 
  223.     
  224.                A SELF-CONSISTENT Theory is MUCH MORE than the ORTHODOX 
  225.           physicists and astronomers have!  They CLAIM to be looking 
  226.           for a "unified field theory" that works, but have been 
  227.           IGNORING one for over 30 years now! 
  228.     
  229.                "Modern physics" does NOT explain the physical universe 
  230.           so well.  Some parts of some of Larson's books are FULL of 
  231.           quotations of leading orthodox physicists and astronomers who 
  232.           agree.  And remember that "epicycles", "crystal spheres", 
  233.           "geocentricity", "flat earth theory", etc., ALSO once SEEMED 
  234.           to explain it well, but were later proved CONCEPTUALLY WRONG.

  237.                Prof. Frank H. Meyer, Professor Emeritus of UW-Superior, 
  238.           was/is a STRONG PROPONENT of Larson's Theory, and was (or 
  239.           still is) President of Larson's organization, "THE 
  240.           INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF UNIFIED SCIENCE", and Editor of 
  241.           their quarterly Journal "RECIPROCITY".  He moved to 
  242.           Minneapolis after retiring.

  246.           "Super Collider" BOONDOGGLE!
  247.           
  248.                I am AGAINST contruction of the "Superconducting Super 
  249.           Collider", in Texas or anywhere else.  It would be a GROSS 
  250.           WASTE of money, and contribute almost NOTHING of "scientific" 
  251.           value. 
  252.     
  253.                Most physicists don't realize it, but, according to the 
  254.           comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the late Physicist 
  255.           Dewey B. Larson, as described in his books, the strange GOOFY 
  256.           particles ("mesons", "hyperons", ALLEGED "quarks", etc.) 
  257.           which they are finding in EXISTING colliders (Fermi Lab, 
  258.           Cern, etc.) are really just ATOMS of ANTI-MATTER, which are 
  259.           CREATED by the high-energy colliding beams, and which quickly 
  260.           disintegrate like cosmic rays because they are incompatible 
  261.           with their environment. 
  262.     
  263.                A larger and more expensive collider will ONLY create a 
  264.           few more elements of anti-matter that the physicists have not 
  265.           seen there before, and the physicists will be EVEN MORE 
  266.           CONFUSED THAN THEY ARE NOW!

  268.                Are a few more types of anti-matter atoms worth the $8.3 
  269.           BILLION cost?!!  Don't we have much more important uses for 
  270.           this WASTED money?! 
  271.     
  272.      
  273.                Another thing to consider is that the primary proposed 
  274.           location in Texas has a serious and growing problem with some 
  275.           kind of "fire ants" eating the insulation off underground 
  276.           cables.  How much POISONING of the ground and ground water 
  277.           with insecticides will be required to keep the ants out of 
  278.           the "Supercollider"?! 
  279.     
  280.           
  281.                Naming the "Super Collider" after Ronald Reagon, as 
  282.           proposed, is TOTALLY ABSURD!  If it is built, it should be 
  283.           named after a leading particle PHYSICIST.

  287.           LARSONIAN Anti-Matter
  288.           
  289.                In Larson's comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the 
  290.           physical universe, anti-matter is NOT a simple case of 
  291.           opposite charges of the same types of particles.  It has more 
  292.           to do with the rates of vibrations and rotations of the 
  293.           photons of which they are made, in relation to the 
  294.           vibrational and rotational equivalents of the speed of light, 
  295.           which Larson calls "Unit Velocity" and the "Natural Datum". 
  296.      
  297.                In Larson's Theory, a positron is actually a particle of 
  298.           MATTER, NOT anti-matter.  When a positron and electron meet, 
  299.           the rotational vibrations (charges) and rotations of their 
  300.           respective photons (of which they are made) neutralize each 
  301.           other. 
  302.       
  303.                In Larson's Theory, the ANTI-MATTER half of the physical 
  304.           universe has THREE dimensions of TIME, and ONLY ONE dimension 
  305.           of space, and exists in a RECIPROCAL RELATIONSHIP to our 
  306.           MATERIAL half.

  310.           LARSONIAN Relativity
  311.           
  312.                The perihelion point in the orbit of the planet Mercury 
  313.           has been observed and precisely measured to ADVANCE at the 
  314.           rate of 574 seconds of arc per century.  531 seconds of this 
  315.           advance are attributed via calculations to gravitational 
  316.           perturbations from the other planets (Venus, Earth, Jupiter, 
  317.           etc.).  The remaining 43 seconds of arc are being used to 
  318.           help "prove" Einstein's "General Theory of Relativity". 
  319.     
  320.                But the late Physicist Dewey B. Larson achieved results 
  321.           CLOSER to the 43 seconds than "General Relativity" can, by 
  322.           INSTEAD using "SPECIAL Relativity".  In one or more of his 
  323.           books, he applied the LORENTZ TRANSFORMATION on the HIGH 
  324.           ORBITAL SPEED of Mercury. 
  325.     
  326.                Larson TOTALLY REJECTED "General Relativity" as another 
  327.           MATHEMATICAL FANTASY.  He also REJECTED most of "Special 
  328.           Relativity", including the parts about "mass increases" near 
  329.           the speed of light, and the use of the Lorentz Transform on 
  330.           doppler shifts, (Those quasars with red-shifts greater than 
  331.           1.000 REALLY ARE MOVING FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT, 
  332.           although most of that motion is away from us IN TIME.). 
  333.      
  334.                In Larson's comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the 
  335.           physical universe, there are THREE dimensions of time instead 
  336.           of only one.  But two of those dimensions can NOT be measured 
  337.           from our material half of the physical universe.  The one 
  338.           dimension that we CAN measure is the CLOCK time.  At low 
  339.           relative speeds, the values of the othe two dimensions are 
  340.           NEGLIGIBLE; but at high speeds, they become significant, and 
  341.           the Lorentz Transformation must be used as a FUDGE FACTOR. 
  342.           [Larson often used the term "COORDINATE TIME" when writing 
  343.           about this.] 
  344.     
  345.      
  346.                In regard to "mass increases", it has been PROVEN in 
  347.           atomic accelerators that acceleration drops toward zero near 
  348.           the speed of light.  But the formula for acceleration is 
  349.           ACCELERATION = FORCE / MASS, (a = F/m).  Orthodox physicists 
  350.           are IGNORING the THIRD FACTOR: FORCE.  In Larson's Theory, 
  351.           mass STAYS CONSTANT and FORCE drops toward zero.  FORCE is 
  352.           actually a MOTION, or COMBINATIONS of MOTIONS, or RELATIONS 
  353.           BETWEEN MOTIONS, including INward and OUTward SCALAR MOTIONS.  
  354.           The expansion of the universe, for example, is an OUTward 
  355.           SCALAR motion inherent in the universe and NOT a result of 
  356.           the so-called "Big Bang" (which is yet another MATHEMATICAL 
  357.           FANTASY).

  361.           THE UNIVERSE OF MOTION

  363.                I wish to recommend to EVERYONE the book "THE UNIVERSE 
  364.           OF MOTION", by Dewey B. Larson, 1984, North Pacific 
  365.           Publishers, (P.O. Box 13255, Portland, Oregon  97213), 456 
  366.           pages, indexed, hardcover. 
  367.     
  368.                It contains the Astrophysical portions of a GENERAL 
  369.           UNIFIED Theory of the physical universe developed by that 
  370.           author, an UNrecognized GENIUS, more than thirty years ago. 
  371.     
  372.                It contains FINAL SOLUTIONS to most all Astrophysical 
  373.           mysteries, including the FORMATION of galaxies, binary and 
  374.           multiple star systems, and solar systems, the TRUE ORIGIN of 
  375.           the "3-degree" background radiation, cosmic rays, and gamma-
  376.           ray bursts, and the TRUE NATURE of quasars, pulsars, white 
  377.           dwarfs, exploding galaxies, etc.. 
  378.     
  379.                It contains what astronomers and astrophysicists are ALL 
  380.           looking for, if they are ready to seriously consider it with 
  381.           OPEN MINDS! 
  382.     
  383.                The following is an example of his Theory's success:
  384.           In his first book in 1959, "THE STRUCTURE OF THE PHYSICAL 
  385.           UNIVERSE", Larson predicted the existence of EXPLODING 
  386.           GALAXIES, several years BEFORE astronomers started finding 
  387.           them.  They are a NECESSARY CONSEQUENCE of Larson's 
  388.           comprehensive Theory.  And when QUASARS were discovered, he 
  389.           had an immediate related explanation for them also.

  393.           GAMMA-RAY BURSTS
  394.  
  395.                Astro-physicists and astronomers are still scratching 
  396.           their heads about the mysterious GAMMA-RAY BURSTS.  They were 
  397.           originally thought to originate from "neutron stars" in the 
  398.           disc of our galaxy.  But the new Gamma Ray Telescope now in 
  399.           Earth orbit has been detecting them in all directions 
  400.           uniformly, and their source locations in space do NOT 
  401.           correspond to any known objects, (except for a few cases of 
  402.           directional coincidence). 
  403.     
  404.                Gamma-ray bursts are a NECESSARY CONSEQUENCE of the 
  405.           GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the physical universe developed by 
  406.           the late Physicist Dewey B. Larson.  According to page 386 of 
  407.           his book "THE UNIVERSE OF MOTION", published in 1984, the 
  408.           gamma-ray bursts are coming from SUPERNOVA EXPLOSIONS in the 
  409.           ANTI-MATTER HALF of the physical universe, which Larson calls 
  410.           the "Cosmic Sector".  Because of the relationship between the 
  411.           anti-matter and material halves of the physical universe, and 
  412.           the way they are connected together, the gamma-ray bursts can 
  413.           pop into our material half anywhere in space, seemingly at 
  414.           random.  (This is WHY the source locations of the bursts do 
  415.           not correspond with known objects, and come from all 
  416.           directions uniformly.) 
  417.     
  418.                I wonder how close to us in space a source location 
  419.           would have to be for a gamma-ray burst to kill all or most 
  420.           life on Earth!  There would be NO WAY to predict one, NOR to 
  421.           stop it! 
  422.     
  423.                Perhaps some of the MASS EXTINCTIONS of the past, which 
  424.           are now being blamed on impacts of comets and asteroids, were 
  425.           actually caused by nearby GAMMA-RAY BURSTS! 
  426.

  429.           LARSONIAN Binary Star Formation
  430.           
  431.                About half of all the stars in the galaxy in the 
  432.           vicinity of the sun are binary or double.  But orthodox 
  433.           astronomers and astrophysicists still have no satisfactory 
  434.           theory about how they form or why there are so many of them. 
  435.     
  436.                But binary star systems are actually a LIKELY 
  437.           CONSEQUENCE of the comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of 
  438.           the physical universe developed by the late Physicist Dewey 
  439.           B. Larson. 
  440.     
  441.                I will try to summarize Larsons explanation, which is 
  442.           detailed in Chapter 7 of his book "THE UNIVERSE OF MOTION" 
  443.           and in some of his other books. 
  444.     
  445.                First of all, according to Larson, stars do NOT generate 
  446.           energy by "fusion".  A small fraction comes from slow 
  447.           gravitational collapse.  The rest results from the COMPLETE 
  448.           ANNIHILATION of HEAVY elements (heavier than IRON).  Each 
  449.           element has a DESTRUCTIVE TEMPERATURE LIMIT.  The heavier the 
  450.           element is, the lower is this limit.  A star's internal 
  451.           temperature increases as it grows in mass via accretion and 
  452.           absorption of the decay products of cosmic rays, gradually 
  453.           reaching the destructive temperature limit of lighter and 
  454.           lighter elements. 
  455.     
  456.                When the internal temperature of the star reaches the 
  457.           destructive temperature limit of IRON, there is a Type I 
  458.           SUPERNOVA EXPLOSION!  This is because there is SO MUCH iron 
  459.           present; and that is related to the structure of iron atoms 
  460.           and the atom building process, which Larson explains in some 
  461.           of his books [better than I can]. 
  462.     
  463.                When the star explodes, the lighter material on the 
  464.           outer portion of the star is blown outward in space at less 
  465.           than the speed of light.  The heavier material in the center 
  466.           portion of the star was already bouncing around at close to 
  467.           the speed of light, because of the high temperature.  The 
  468.           explosion pushes that material OVER the speed of light, and 
  469.           it expands OUTWARD IN TIME, which is equivalent to INWARD IN 
  470.           SPACE, and it often actually DISAPPEARS for a while. 
  471.     
  472.                Over long periods of time, both masses start to fall 
  473.           back gravitationally.  The material that had been blown 
  474.           outward in space now starts to form a RED GIANT star.  The 
  475.           material that had been blown OUTWARD IN TIME starts to form a 
  476.           WHITE DWARF star.  BOTH stars then start moving back toward 
  477.           the "MAIN SEQUENCE" from opposite directions on the H-R 
  478.           Diagram. 
  479.     
  480.                The chances of the two masses falling back into the 
  481.           exact same location in space, making a single lone star 
  482.           again, are near zero.  They will instead form a BINARY system, 
  483.           orbiting each other. 
  484.      
  485.                According to Larson, a white dwarf star has an INVERSE 
  486.           DENSITY GRADIENT (is densest at its SURFACE), because the 
  487.           material at its center is most widely dispersed (blown 
  488.           outward) in time.   This ELIMINATES the need to resort to 
  489.           MATHEMATICAL FANTASIES about "degenerate matter", "neutron 
  490.           stars", "black holes", etc..

  496.                If the mass of the heavy material at the center of the 
  497.           exploding star is relatively SMALL, then, instead of a single 
  498.           white dwarf star, there will be SEVERAL "mini" white dwarf 
  499.           stars (revolving around the red giant star, but probably 
  500.           still too far away in three-dimensional TIME to be affected 
  501.           by its heat, etc.).  These will become PLANETS!

  503.                In Chapter 7 of THE UNIVERSE OF MOTION, Larson used all 
  504.           this information, and other principles of his comprehensive 
  505.           GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the physical universe, to derive 
  506.           his own version of Bode's Law.

  510.           "Black Hole" FANTASY!

  512.                I heard that physicist Stephen W. Hawking recently 
  513.           completed a theoretical mathematical analysis of TWO "black 
  514.           holes" merging together into a SINGLE "black hole", and 
  515.           concluded that the new "black hole" would have MORE MASS than 
  516.           the sum of the two original "black holes". 
  517.     
  518.                Such a result should be recognized by EVERYone as a RED 
  519.           FLAG, causing widespread DOUBT about the whole IDEA of "black 
  520.           holes", etc.! 
  521.     
  522.                After reading Physicist Dewey B. Larson's books about 
  523.           his comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the physical 
  524.           universe, especially his book "THE UNIVERSE OF MOTION", it is 
  525.           clear to me that "black holes" are NOTHING more than 
  526.           MATHEMATICAL FANTASIES!  The strange object at Cygnus X-1 is 
  527.           just an unusually massive WHITE DWARF STAR, NOT the "black 
  528.           hole" that orthodox astronomers and physicists so badly want 
  529.           to "prove" their theory.

  532.                By the way, I do NOT understand why so much publicity is 
  533.           being given to physicist Stephen Hawking.  The physicists and 
  534.           astronomers seem to be acting as if Hawking's severe physical 
  535.           problem somehow makes him "wiser".  It does NOT!

  537.                I wish the same attention had been given to Physicist 
  538.           Dewey B. Larson while he was still alive.  Widespread 
  539.           publicity and attention should NOW be given to Larson's 
  540.           Theory, books, and organization (The International Society of 
  541.           Unified Science).

  545.           ELECTRO-MAGNETIC PROPULSION

  547.                I heard of that concept many years ago, in connection 
  548.           with UFO's and unorthodox inventors, but I never was able to 
  549.           find out how or why they work, or how they are constructed. 
  550.     
  551.                I found a possible clue about why they might work on 
  552.           pages 112-113 of the book "BASIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER", by 
  553.           the late Physicist Dewey B. Larson, which describes part of 
  554.           Larson's comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the physical 
  555.           universe.  I quote one paragraph: 
  556.     
  557.                "As indicated in the preceding chapter, the development 
  558.           of the theory of the universe of motion arrives at a totally 
  559.           different concept of the nature of electrical resistance.  
  560.           The electrons, we find, are derived from the environment.  It 
  561.           was brought out in Volume I [Larson's book "NOTHING BUT 
  562.           MOTION"] that there are physical processes in operation which 
  563.           produce electrons in substantial quantities, and that, 
  564.           although the motions that constitute these electrons are, in 
  565.           many cases, absorbed by atomic structures, the opportunities 
  566.           for utilizing this type of motion in such structures are 
  567.           limited.  It follows that there is always a large excess of 
  568.           free electrons in the material sector [material half] of the 
  569.           universe, most of which are uncharged.  In this uncharged 
  570.           state the electrons cannot move with respect to extension 
  571.           space, because they are inherently rotating units of space, 
  572.           and the relation of space to space is not motion.  In open 
  573.           space, therefore, each uncharged electron remains permanently 
  574.           in the same location with respect to the natural reference 
  575.           system, in the manner of a photon.  In the context of the 
  576.           stationary spatial reference system the uncharged electron, 
  577.           like the photon, is carried outward at the speed of light by 
  578.           the progression of the natural reference system.  All 
  579.           material aggregates are thus exposed to a flux of electrons 
  580.           similar to the continual bombardment by photons of radiation.  
  581.           Meanwhile there are other processes, to be discussed later, 
  582.           whereby electrons are returned to the environment.  The 
  583.           electron population of a material aggregate such as the earth 
  584.           therefore stabilizes at an equilibrium level." 
  585.           
  586.                Note that in Larson's Theory, UNcharged electrons are 
  587.           also massLESS, and are basically photons of light of a 
  588.           particular frequency (above the "unit" frequency) spinning 
  589.           around one axis at a particular rate (below the "unit" rate).  
  590.           ("Unit velocity" is the speed of light, and there are 
  591.           vibrational and rotational equivalents to the speed of light, 
  592.           according to Larson's Theory.)  [I might have the "above" and 
  593.           "below" labels mixed up.] 
  594.     
  595.                Larson is saying that outer space is filled with mass-
  596.           LESS UN-charged electrons flying around at the speed of 
  597.           light! 
  598.     
  599.                If this is true, then the ELECTRO-MAGNETIC PROPULSION 
  600.           fields of spacecraft might be able to interact with these 
  601.           electrons, or other particles in space, perhaps GIVING them a 
  602.           charge (and mass) and shooting them toward the rear to 
  603.           achieve propulsion. (In Larson's Theory, an electrical charge 
  604.           is a rotational vibration of a particular frequency (above 
  605.           the "unit" frequency) superimposed on the rotation of the 
  606.           particle.) 
  607.       
  608.                The paragraph quoted above might also give a clue to 
  609.           confused meteorologists about how lightning is generated in 
  610.           clouds.

  614.           SUPPRESSION of LARSONIAN Physics
  615.  
  616.                The comprehensive GENERAL UNIFIED Theory of the physical 
  617.           universe developed by the late Physicist Dewey B. Larson has 
  618.           been available for more than 30 YEARS, published in 1959 in 
  619.           his first book "THE STRUCTURE OF THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE". 
  620.     
  621.                It is TOTALLY UN-SCIENTIFIC for Hawking, Wheeler, Sagan, 
  622.           and the other SACRED PRIESTS of the RELIGION they call 
  623.           "science" (or "physics", or "astronomy", etc.), as well as 
  624.           the "scientific" literature and the "education" systems, to 
  625.           TOTALLY IGNORE Larson's Theory has they have. 
  626.     
  627.                Larson's Theory has excellent explanations for many 
  628.           things now puzzling orthodox physicists and astronomers, such 
  629.           as gamma-ray bursts and the nature of quasars. 
  630.     
  631.                Larson's Theory deserves to be HONESTLY and OPENLY 
  632.           discussed in the physics, chemistry, and astronomy journals, 
  633.           in the U.S. and elsewhere.  And at least the basic principles 
  634.           of Larson's Theory should be included in all related courses 
  635.           at UW-EC, UW-Madison, Cambridge, Cornell University, and 
  636.           elsewhere, so that students are not kept in the dark about a 
  637.           worthy alternative to the DOGMA they are being fed.

  729. Nope.  Distance from the sun is not the only variable which determines surface
  730. temp/livability.  Venus' atmosphere is something like 90 times more dense than
  731. that of Earth;  this is what makes it so hot.  Mars, on the other hand, has
  732. a surface gravity which is too small to hang onto most gaseous chemicals, hence
  733. its atmosphere is thin, and doesn't provide enough greenhouse effect.  
  734. Also, putting Venus into an orbit near Earth would do bad things, like destroy
  735. the Earth.  (Perturb its orbit very significantly at least, if not just smash)
  736. into it.

  746. How exactly do you propose to move an ENTIRE GODDAMN PLANET?????  The machinery
  747. to terraform a planet is peanuts compared to what you would need to do to
  748. move a planet.  Machinery is also not the only way to go.  Plant certain
  749. bacteria, etc. which ingest CO2 and put out O2 will begin the process.  Keep
  750. it up with more advanced plants as the temperature falls.  You would most likely
  751. need machinery to help, but not to do the entire thing.

  777. That was the old NASA.  In Goldin's NASA, we fully expect the Pluto mission
  778. cost to include launch, and the current budget ceiling we're looking at is

  800. utilization meeting of 1500 people earlier in the year, only
  801. 15  of the people in attendance considered
  802. themselves to be space station users, as opposed to
  803. contractors, NASA engineers, etc. The question comes to mind
  804. "What's wrong with this picture?" Who will use the space
  805. station when it is ready? The types of science mostly talked
  806. about are life science and microgravity. Microgravity is
  807. somewhat incompatible with people being on board and
  808. jostling the station. Are there plans now to have a module
  809. floating free from the main station for that?
  810.  
  811. What I am curious to find out is, who wants to use the space
  812. station Freedom and for what? There are probably scientists
  813. who want to do basic research, but perhaps there are also
  814. people in industry who have thought about using the ssF for
  815. applied research.
